This blog is about the story of my family here in America. We arrived in the 1630s as Puritans, and became the common folk of the New World.

How tall your ancestors were

When you visit neighborhoods that were built in the time of your ancestors, you have to wonder how tall the people were. Well, they weren't very tall. And some of their lack of height is still reflected in the world we see today.

A full-size mattress today is 75 inches long. For a modern man like me, who is almost six feet tall, that isn't even long enough for me to stretch out. Unless, of course, I didn't have any feet. A queen-size bed is only 80 inches long, which gives just a little bit more room for my huge size 9 feet. No wonder King Size and California King Size beds are so popular!

And if you live in a neighborhood that was built before the 1970s, good luck getting your SUV, or your pickup truck, in the garage. Not just people were smaller back then, cars were smaller, too.

George Washington was six feet tall, and in the 18th century, he towered over just about everyone. Abraham Lincoln, who was over six feet tall, would have had some difficulty getting comfortable in the 19th century, too. So, as you squeeze into that aisle seat on the plane, remember that people used to be smaller!

The photo is of my grandfather, who was 5' 4". He would have been comfortable!
