This blog is about the story of my family here in America. We arrived in the 1630s as Puritans, and became the common folk of the New World.

The failure of the Puritans

By the late 1600s, and after a few generations in America, the general feeling among the Puritan clergy is that their goal of establishing a "shining city on a hill" or a "New Jerusalem", was failing. You have to understand that these people were not creating the American "freedom of religion" that we think of today, they were establishing a community based on Christian faith.

In "The Magnalia Christi Americana" - "The Great Works of Christ in America", written in 1702 by The Reverend Cotton Mather, he is already describing the decline of the high ideals set down by his great-grandfather, The Reverend John Cotton. By the way, even though the title is written in Latin, the book itself is written in English, and is still available to read today, if you are interested.

But the failure of the Church-run State sets the stage for a new idea that is about to sweep around the world in the 1700s - humanism. It will mean the end of the divine right of Kings, and revolution here in America and in France, and freedom!
